The Best Eatery in Hamilton, NZ: Where to Eat

Maybe you’ve had a fun day exploring free things to do in Hamilton. Or coming back from a day trip from Hamilton. Hamilton may not be as famous as Auckland or Wellington for its food scene, but I think it has decent food options. Whether you’re craving smoky Korean BBQ, fresh sushi, comforting noodles, or a delicious brunch, Hamilton has something for everyone. Here’s a guide to the best places to eat, categorized by food type, so you know exactly where to go for your next meal.

Best Korean BBQ: Tongkun

If you’re after a satisfying, budget-friendly Korean BBQ experience, Tongkun is the place to be. This eatery is a favorite for its all-you-can-eat meat selection at an affordable price of just $37 per person! You can grill your own beef, pork, and chicken right at your table, making it a fun and interactive dining experience. Pair your sizzling meat with classic Korean side dishes like kimchi and pickled radish for a complete feast which is included in the price. Better still, there is a whole Korean fried chicken buffet. Come hungry for the best experience lol.

It’s an excellent choice for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner.

Best Noodles: Garden Place Noodle Bar

When it comes to noodles, Garden Place Noodle Bar stands out for its flavorful broths and handmade noodles. Whether you’re in the mood for spicy Sichuan noodles, a rich beef noodle soup, or a simple but tasty stir-fry, this eatery never disappoints. Best Ice Cream: Little Lato (…or Duck Island)

Duck Island definitely has got a cult following, but I personally think that Little Lato is actually better (sorry!). They are located inside MADE in Hamilton East, actually not so far from Duck Island. You’ll see that they have so many award winning flavour. I think Speculoos is absolutely delicious, and mango lassi for the dairy free one. I typically favour dairy ice cream, but mango lassi is one of the few non dairy ice cream I choose over the dairy alternative. It’s just so good! Hokey pokey is of course a New Zealand favourite and their hokey pokey is absolutely amazing.

Duck Island, however, is a clear local’s favourite. They are known for their less traditional ice cream flavour. I think they make it by the batch. There are so many good things about homemade ice cream which are obvious. The less obvious drawback being that sometimes the flavour you want is not there. No worries, you just need to come back again next time! I suggest trying their mint chocolate. The mint taste like, actual mint instead of mint flavouring. I am so disappointed that I couldn’t find hokey pokey last time I went there nor in the shop! I could have sworn I’ve tried it before though, so it may be that they just run out, I’m not sure.

The containers are neatly arranged on shelves, showcasing a vibrant array of colors that represent flavors like S'mores, Fairy Bread, Mint Choc, Choc PBJ, and Cookies & Cream. A sign at the top reads: 'Can't see your favourite flavour? Ask a staff member to scoop it from the cabinet.' The display is bright and inviting, with clear labels on each container, offering a tempting selection for ice cream lovers.

Best Bakery: Volare

If you love fresh bread and pastries, Volare is a must-visit. This bakery is famous for its artisan sourdough, buttery croissants, and delicious doughnuts. Everything is baked fresh daily, and the quality is evident in every bite. Whether you need a quick breakfast or a treat to go with your coffee, Volare is the perfect stop.

Best Brunch: Hayes Common

Brunch lovers will find a home at Hayes Common, one of Hamilton’s best spots for a relaxed morning meal. The menu features fresh, seasonal ingredients with dishes like eggs benedict, smashed avocado on sourdough, and house-made granola. The café has a warm, welcoming vibe, making it a great place to catch up with friends or simply enjoy a slow morning with a good coffee. In fact. come for breakfast, lunch, coffee – they’ve got you covered.

Best Dim Sum: Regal Chinese Restaurant

Dim Sum is my go-to brunch on a slow morning, so of course I had to find a good dim sum in Hamilton. There are not that many option but Regal did well in my opinion. The Dim Sum are juicy, good-sized and delicious. The service could be improved, but it was okay generally. Someone cut the queue and got served before me on the till, that’s all.

A cart in the background displays additional bamboo steamers and plates, while other tables and chairs in the dining area are visible. A piece of paper with Chinese characters lies partially unfolded on the table, adding an authentic touch to the scene.

Best Hotpot: Nan Hot Pot

Warning: best enjoyed if you like spicy food! Or like me you can’t eat spicy food but will suffer for good food XD

If you are craving for some hot pot, go to Nan Hot Pot! They are located centrally in Victoria Street. I came on a Friday night at 8 pm but I could get a table still without reservation. Hot pot generally are more expensive than other meals, so I think it was expected. There are a big variety of meat, vegetables and side dishes to be ordered. The portion I think are quite small but great for 2-3 people. They are absolutely delicious though! The dry rub spices I think was also very delicious. Though we paid the price after that on the toilet…. Szechuan style hot pot needs to be enjoyed with some spice.

At the center of the table is a divided hot pot with two types of broth: one is spicy beef tallow which has red colour with chili peppers, and the other is a clear broth with mushrooms. Surrounding the hot pot are plates of raw meat, bowls of fresh vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, and other ingredients ready to be cooked in the broths. A drink with a straw is also placed on the table. The ambiance of the restaurant includes wooden tables and chairs, creating a warm and traditional dining atmosphere
Warning: spicy-resistant stomach required!
