Pro tip: you’ll *need* a car to visit any of these, other than Auckland. So make sure you’ve read our guide about car insurance and buying a car, if you’re in Hamilton for longer! (And if you are just visiting – here’s the best time to visit New Zealand)
1. Raglan – Surf, Sun & Laid-Back Vibes
Distance: 45 minutes west
Raglan is a beautiful coastal gem known for surfing, black sand beaches, and relaxed atmosphere. Spend the day at Ngarunui Beach, grab a coffee at The Shack, or take in the stunning views at Bridal Veil Falls. Tip:Raglan is well-known as a surfers town!

2. Blue Springs, Putāruru – Crystal Clear Water
Distance: 1 hour southeast
The Blue Springs at Putāruru are famous for their crystal-clear water, which supplies around 70% of New Zealand’s bottled water. You’ve probably seen it in social media, it became quite viral in social media. Take a scenic walk along the Te Waihou Walkway, a peaceful trail with stunning blue pools and lush greenery. The Leslie Road entrance are finally reopened after some reconstruction work now! Note: there are 2 car parks, the Leslie Road entrance and the Whites Road entrances. If you don’t want to walk much, choose the Leslie Road entrance (800 metres to the walkway compared to 4.7 km from Whites Road).

3. Hobbiton – A Must for Movie Fans
Distance: 45 minutes east
Step into the world of Middle-earth with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set. Wander past the charming Hobbit holes, visit The Green Dragon Inn, and soak in the magic of this iconic film location. The tickets are quite expensive- but it’s a must for any Lord of the Rings fan! If you are staying in Auckland while visiting without a car – there is an option with transfer.
4. Taupō – Lake Adventures & Waterfalls
Distance: 1.5 hours south
Home to New Zealand’s largest lake, Taupō is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Marvel at Huka Falls, take a boat cruise to the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings, or soak in the natural hot pools at Otumuheke Stream (it’s free!). Wairakei Terrace and Spa is the paid version of Otumuheke, but it has cool terraces and quite affordable.

5. Waitomo Caves – Glowworms & Adventure
Distance: 1 hour southwest
Experience the enchanting Waitomo Glowworm Caves, where thousands of glowworms light up the underground caverns. If you’re feeling adventurous, try black water rafting through the cave system.
6. Rotorua – Geothermal Wonders & Māori Culture
Distance: 1.5 hours southeast
Rotorua is famous for its bubbling mud pools, geysers, and rich Māori heritage. Visit Te Puia for geothermal wonders and cultural performances, relax in the Polynesian Spa, or walk among the towering redwoods in Whakarewarewa Forest.
7. Whangamatā – Beautiful Beaches & Coastal Walks
Distance: 2 hours northeast
Whangamatā is a stunning beach town on the Coromandel Peninsula, ideal for a relaxing day by the sea. Enjoy the golden sands, go for a kayak to Whenuakura (also known as Donut) Island, or take a scenic coastal walk at Wentworth Valley. If you would like to go kayaking, make sure to book in advance as it can get quite busy. You only need to call the phone number, I’ve used Pedal and Paddle in Whangamata before and can recommend them. They were generous with the time and not hurrying us up. The kayak rental slots is every 2 hours (10 am, 12 noon, 2 pm etc), but they do recommend the morning slots as the waves are apparently calmer.

8. Auckland – A Taste of the Big City
Distance: 1.5 hours north
If you’re after a city escape, Auckland has it all—harbour views, shopping, museums, and great food. Climb Mt. Eden for panoramic city views, explore Waiheke Island, or visit Auckland Art Gallery for a dose of culture. If you want to see the overview of the city, you can take a half day tour or a full day tour, as you prefer. PS do you know you can even see dolphins and whales from Auckland?
9. Karangahake Gorge – History & Hikes
Distance: 1 hour northeast
For a mix of history and outdoor adventure, head to Karangahake Gorge. Walk through old gold mining tunnels, cross the swing bridge, and admire the stunning scenery along the Windows Walk and Rail Tunnel Loop. Pro tip: bring your swimming clothes, the water is SO clear you won’t be able to resist having a dip (refreshing, but cold!).

10. Arapuni Swing Bridge – Scenic Views & Walks
Distance: 1 hour south
Visit the Arapuni Swing Bridge, a historic suspension bridge offering incredible views over the Waikato River. It’s a great stop for a short walk and a perfect spot for photos. PS you can combine Arapuni and Blue Springs on the same day, and don’t forget to stop at Rhubarb Cafe in Arapuni! They serve amazing cakes… Though they are closed by 3:39 pm.

11. Matamata – More Than Just Hobbiton
Distance: 50 minutes east
Beyond Hobbiton, Matamata is a lovely rural town with rolling green hills and great cafés. Visit Wairere Falls, the highest waterfall in the North Island, or stop by Opal Hot Springs for a relaxing soak. To be honest, both Wairere Falls and Opal Hot Springs are outside Matamata, not in the middle of it – but not sure how else best to describe it – sorry!
12. Hakarimata Ranges – Scenic Bush Walks & Views
Distance: 30 minutes north
For those who love hiking, the Hakarimata Ranges offer stunning native bush walks and rewarding views. The Hakarimata Summit Track is a challenging climb up 1,349 steps, but the panoramic view from the top is worth the effort. If you prefer an easier walk, try the Waterworks Walk, which follows a gentle path along a scenic stream with small waterfalls. You can do both definitely in an afternoon – here’s the full info of the tracks from Department of Conservations.

13. Otorohanga Kiwi House – See New Zealand’s Iconic Bird
Distance: 45 minutes southwest
For a chance to see the elusive kiwi up close, visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House. This wildlife sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation of New Zealand’s native birds and reptiles. Walk through the nocturnal kiwi houses, see tuataras, and learn about the efforts to protect these unique species. It’s an excellent stop for families and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
You may notice that there are many places to see the Kiwi – but this place is the most recommended by the locals. For example, the National Kiwi Hatchery in Rotorua is another option, but the ticket is more than double than Otorohanga Kiwi House at the time of writing. Also it’s a different experience compared to zoo (Auckland zoo, for example).
14. Pirongia – Volcanic Peaks & Tranquil Bush Walks
Distance: 30 minutes southwest
Mount Pirongia is a stunning destination for hiking and nature lovers. You can’t miss Pirongia if you live in Hamilton and you hike mountain. The Mangakara Nature Walk is an easy, family-friendly option through lush native forest, while the Tirohanga Track offers breathtaking views from the summit. For a challenge, take on the Mahaukura or Ruapane tracks, which provide incredible scenery and a sense of adventure. Pirongia also has great picnic spots and charming cafés in the nearby village. Here’s the information about the tracks from Department of Conservation.

Whether you’re in the mood for adventure, relaxation, or a taste of local culture, these day trips from Hamilton offer something for everyone. Pack your bags, hit the road, and explore the best of the North Island!
