Manchester is packed with great date ideas—whether you’re looking for a relaxed day outdoors, a fun night in the city, or something a bit different. Here’s a round-up of the best things to do in Manchester for couples, from gardens to mini-golf to museums and more.

Visit the Gardens

Some free and some not, I think walk in a garden is a fantastic idea for a date. I find it’s so easy to talk while walking and enjoying

  • Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens (Didsbury) – Free. There are some flowers, some grass to picnic, a cafe for coffee, pubs for drinks after, and the River Mersey behind for longer walks. What can be more perfect.
  • RHS Garden Bridgewater (Salford) – More flowery and curated garden, and not free. But it’s absolutely beautiful especially in the summer. There’s a restaurant and the food is delicious.
  • Heaton Park – More of a park than a garden, but perfect for picnics, boating, and little woodland walks.

Behind the pond, a rustic greenhouse stands amidst a backdrop of lush greenery and autumnal trees. A couple of visitors stroll along a nearby path, adding life to the serene setting. The overall atmosphere is peaceful, showcasing the natural beauty and meticulous design of the garden.

Get Competitive at Junkyard Golf

If you like a bit of fun with your romance, Junkyard Golf Club is full of colour, quirky courses, and cocktails. They are based on First Street just off Deansgate so pretty central. You can even get drinks or food before/after nearby! Perfect for a casual date night with a competitive twist. In fact, this is what I did on my second date with my now husband, and he asked me to be his girlfriend after 😉

Walk Along the Canal

The canal paths through Castlefield, Deansgate and/or Salford Quays offer a laid-back alternative to the usual city centre stroll. My favourite is Salford Quays. I don’t even know how to explain it but I just think it’s the nicest. Even when the sun is down in winter, the lights from MediaCity area lights up the canal walk on Salford Quays. You can also look out for cute bridges, hidden cafés, and waterside bars along the way. A sunset walk with takeaway coffees (or mulled wine in winter) is always a win.

Or, for a special date, why not take a river cruise? The cruise starts from Salford Quays but goes through Manchester Ship Canal and River Irwell. Yep, that’s the river going through Manchester if you don’t know. I love river cruise because you get to sit down and hear the commentary while seeing loads of places.

Reflections of the buildings dance across the water, illuminated by soft streetlights and glowing bridge supports. A cloudy sky tinged with the warm hues of the setting sun adds a dreamy atmosphere. On the right, the Lowry Outlet stands prominently, blending urban charm with serene surroundings.

Grab a Drink Together

I’m not really a drinker but drinks are a very typical date activity. Whether you fancy stylish cocktails or relaxed pub vibes, Manchester has plenty of options:

  • The Washhouse – A hidden speakeasy disguised as a laundrette.
  • Cloud 23 – Sip cocktails high above the city in the Beetham Tower.
  • Albert’s Schloss – Cosy and buzzing, with live music and great beer. Plus you can order delicious schweinehaxe (my favourite!).
  • Seven Bro7hers Beerhouse – Great for craft beer fans and a chilled-out vibe.

Go Out for a Bite

Sharing food is always romantic—here are some couple-friendly restaurants:

  • Evelyn’s – I think they do great brunch.
  • Mackie Mayor – A vibrant food hall with everything from bao to burgers. Especially great for dates because you have such a great selection of food. I mean if one of you is lactose intolerant and the other one is craving pizza, then you can get your own thing.
  • Chinatown – dim sum, noodles, bubble tea, Asian food…. in my opinion is always a win.

Communal tables fill the space, surrounded by people enjoying meals and drinks. The upper level features additional seating, adorned with string lights. Various food stalls line the walls, displaying chalkboard menus. The image highlights the lively atmosphere and architectural charm of this historic venue.
Mackie Mayor! I always end up with the ramen on the corner lol.

Visit a Museum Together

For something a bit more cultural and free especially on rainy days I suppose. Manchester got a massive selection of museums are a great way to spend a few hours.

  • Manchester Art Gallery – Right in the city centre with an excellent mix of classic and contemporary art.
  • Science and Industry Museum – Fun, interactive, and fascinating if you love history, tech, or inventions.
  • The Whitworth – Set within Whitworth Park, this is perfect for art lovers. Grab a coffee and take a stroll afterwards in the park.
  • People’s History Museum – A look at Manchester’s radical roots and social justice movements. Surprisingly interesting even if you’re not into politics!

Take a Day Trip to the Peak District

If you’re both into walking or just love a bit of nature, the Peak District is just a short drive or train ride away—and full of amazing date-day options.

  • Edale to Mam Tor – A classic hike with jaw-dropping views. Challenging in parts but worth it.
  • Dovedale – Pretty valleys, stepping stones, and more of a gentle walk.
  • Bakewell or Castleton – Ideal for pottering about, visiting cute cafés, and popping into a country pub.
  • Kinder Scout – For more adventurous couples looking for a proper full-day hike.

Don’t forget your waterproofs—just in case! Or if you are looking for day trips idea from Manchester other than hiking – there’s absolutely loads of options. Even if you don’t have a car.

A winding dirt path leads through the foreground, where a few walkers can be seen enjoying the trail. In the distance, the lush countryside stretches out, dotted with fields and small villages. The image showcases the natural beauty and tranquility of this iconic location.
Mam Tor’s absolutely gorgeous and it’s definitely a doable day trip for a Saturday hike.

Visit the Library (Yes, Really!)

For the booklovers amongst us, the library may be perfect for your next date. John Rylands Library is like something out of Harry Potter—soaring ceilings, gothic architecture, and cosy reading nooks. Even if you’re not book lovers, it’s a stunning place to explore and one of Manchester’s most beautiful hidden gems. Perfect for a quiet, dreamy escape on a rainy day. I know that you’re not supposed to talk so much in library haha. But you can visit, marvel at the majestic building, and then discuss it with a drink afterwards! There are many exhibition too, including one of the manuscript of John from the Bible which is worth a visit.

Or you can visit the Main Library – maybe borrow a book and discuss the book in the cafe on the ground floor?

The high, arched ceilings are adorned with intricate stone carvings, and tall stained-glass windows allow soft, colorful light to filter in. Rows of wooden tables with chairs are set for reading, while bookshelves line the walls, filled with aged volumes. Chandeliers hang overhead, adding a warm glow. The space exudes historical charm and scholarly elegance.

Winter Only: Christmas Markets

If you’re in Manchester between mid-November and mid-December(ish – date change every year), you must check out the Manchester Christmas Markets. Spread across the city centre with twinkling lights, mulled wine, festive food, and handcrafted gifts, it’s a magical way to spend a wintery date. What can be more romantic than walking in between Christmas lights with a mulled wine in hand?

A lively scene at the Manchester Christmas Market, filled with wooden stalls adorned with strings of festive lights. Each stall displays menus offering treats like Christmas punch, hot chocolate with rum, bratwurst, and German lager. Wooden barrels serve as counters outside the stalls, and shoppers stroll through the bustling market carrying bags. The warm glow of lights and the cheerful crowd create a joyful holiday atmosphere.
