Free Things to do in Hamilton, New Zealand!

Looking for something to do this weekend? Thankfully, Hamilton has a variety of activities. Best of all, many are completely free! Whether you’re a local looking for new adventures or a visitor on a budget, Hamilton offers plenty of opportunities to have fun without spending a penny. Especially with the crazy increase of cost of living everywhere nowadays. Here are some of my favourite free things to do in Hamilton:

(If you are looking to move to Hamilton, do check this guide on where to live in Hamilton)

Hamilton Gardens (Free for Residents Only!)

Indian garden in Hamilton Gardens, my absolute favourite garden.

Hamilton Gardens is a world-renowned attraction (yes, we won an international award!) featuring beautiful themed gardens from different cultures. Wandering through the gardens feels like travelling the world, with sections inspired by Italian Renaissance, Japanese Zen, and Indian Char Bagh styles. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely walk, photography, or simply unwinding in a peaceful setting. I am so glad to live just a few minutes away and can visit pretty much every day.

Hamilton Gardens unfortunately introduces paid entry last year for non-Hamilton residents ($20 for adults at the time of writing). However, if you are a resident, you can bring your proof of address and they’ll issue you a free card that gains you a free entry. For what it’s worth, they accepted a digital copy on my phone.

Rose Garden – Hamilton Lake

If you’re looking for a beautiful garden experience without entering Hamilton Gardens, consider visiting the rose garden beside Lake Rotoroa. Hamilton Gardens’ rose garden is also free by the way, as the only paid section is the enclosed gardens. They have a lovely section uphill from the lake where the roses are, which is a perfect place to unwind. There are some benches there where you can read books and chill if you wish – though unfortunately it is located between the road and the children playgrounds’ so there may be some noises.

Taitua Arboretum and Tilly’s Lookout

For nature lovers, Taitua Arboretum is a must-visit. This hidden gem offers a network of walking trails surrounded by towering trees, open fields, and picturesque ponds. It’s an ideal place for birdwatching, dog walking, or enjoying a quiet escape from the city. It’s also a nice place to walk even on a hot day, as the trees provide cool shades on pretty much most of the trails. You don’t need long – about 2 hours is more than enough to go around.

Great shady walks for hot sunny day

Around the same location (though it’s still about half an hour walk away), Tilly’s Lookout also provides stunning views of Hamilton, making it worth the visit at the same time. Though as it is a lookout, by definition it’s quite uphill! If you are not so sure about doing the walk, you can definitely drive from the Arboretum to Tilly’s Lookout (street parking) – it’s about 5-10 minutes away by car.

Lake Rotoroa (Hamilton Lake)

Hamilton Lake is a favourite among locals and visitors alike. The scenic walking track loops around the lake, offering lovely views (including Mount Pirongia!) and plenty of seating areas. Families can enjoy the playground, while fitness enthusiasts take advantage of the open spaces for jogging or yoga. It’s also a great spot for a picnic too. Unfortunately, the lake itself is not safe to swim in. It’s home to the Hamilton Rowing Club though, and I’ve spotted some locals kayaking there. The rose garden mentioned above is also on Hamilton Lake, near the playground.

Hamilton Farmers’ Market (Window Shopping!)

If you’re in town on a Sunday 8 am till noon, visit the Hamilton Farmers’ Market in Claudelands Event Centre. While you may be tempted to buy fresh produce and treats, simply walking through and enjoying the lively atmosphere is completely free. They tend to be more expensive I find than supermarkets, but there are many unique things that you don’t find somewhere else. People make all sorts, from bakery to fresh produce to sometimes fresh pasta!

Waikato River Walk and Cycle Trails

The Waikato River Walk is a fantastic way to experience Hamilton’s natural beauty. This picturesque trail runs alongside the Waikato River, providing breathtaking views and opportunities to spot local wildlife. I definitely spotted many fish and birds! Whether you’re walking, cycling, or simply sitting by the water, this trail offers a quiet escape from urban life.

The trails are well maintained and suitable for cycling.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take a swim in the Waikato River! Popular entry points include Wellington Beach, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip on a warm day. Though there are many other entry points such as near St Andrews or even beside Hamilton Gardens.

How can anyone resists those clear water??

Visit the University of Waikato Campus

The University of Waikato has beautifully landscaped grounds, small lakes, and walking paths that are open to the public. It’s a peaceful place for a stroll, and you might even find a quiet spot to read a book or learn something new. Especially if you live nearby.

Parkrun

For those who enjoy running, Hamilton Lake and Hamilton University campus host a free, weekly Parkrun event. This 5km timed run or walk is open to all fitness levels and is a great way to stay active while enjoying the beautiful lake surroundings. Whether you want to challenge yourself or take it easy, it’s a fantastic community event. If you are interested, see you Saturday 8 am there. Make sure you have your barcode ready (register first and print your barcode https://www.parkrun.co.nz/register/ )

Relax at Memorial Park

Memorial Park, located along the Waikato River, is a lovely spot to unwind. The park features historical monuments, picnic areas, and beautiful river views—perfect for a peaceful break.

Make Stuff in the Library!

A visit to Hamilton City Libraries is a great way to enjoy a quiet and enriching experience. Beyond the vast collection of books (which you can also borrow online), the library offers free access to computers, study spaces, and a range of community events.

One of the my favourite thing about the library is the Makerspace, a creative hub where visitors can experiment with 3D printing, virtual reality headsets, some robotic stuff and other technologies. If you are more intro crafting, they also have embroidery and sewing machine, vinyl cutters, badge makers etc which you can use for FREE! The staff are also very knowledgable and skilled and can help. In fact, they do run 3D printing class and 3D CAD class, which currently runs on Fridays 11 am in Rototuna(they alternate the class every week). Please do check the schedule on the library website. The makerspace is available both in Rototuna and Central library.

Whether you’re looking to read, learn a new skill, or get creative, the library is a fantastic free resource for all ages.

Watch the Sunset from a Scenic Spot

Hamilton has some beautiful spots for catching the sunset, for example from Tilly’s lookout. If you are looking for a beach sunset spot, Raglan is not too far away with less than an hour’s drive. (If you are a visitor – read this guide about car insurance in NZ!)

Sunset in Raglan. Well, probably not quite.

Special Events

  • Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival – Held annually, this vibrant event celebrates arts and culture with many free performances and exhibitions, including live music, theatre, and visual arts in a stunning outdoor setting.
  • Balloons over Waikato Festival – One of Hamilton’s most magical events, featuring colourful hot air balloons filling the sky. While the Zuru Nightglow require tickets (free but ballots – unfortunately ballots for this year is already closed!), most of the activities this year is not. You can enjoy the sight of balloons over Hamiton for free. It’s a breathtaking experience, especially for photographers.

Hamilton is full of fantastic free activities, making it a great destination for budget-friendly fun. Whether you love nature, art, or history, there’s something for everyone to enjoy without spending a cent. Have you discovered any other great free activities in Hamilton?
