My first thought on this prompt is, well it depends what is defined by my home nowadays? I grew up in Indonesia but has lived in the UK over 10 years, so I think it’s not unfair to also claim UK as my home.
Another question is, of course, what do we define as close? For the purpose of this article, I will cheat a little and include neighbouring countries.
Close to Indonesia: Malaysia/Australia.
Maybe another cheating haha but these are what came to mind in the first place. I was tempted to rank Australia first, but then it is still kind of far, another continent altogether unlike Malaysia that shares literal land border with Indonesia.
I really wanted to go since I was a kid, but then my Mum kept saying that there’s nothing in Malaysia, and Australia is too expensive. I kind of understand the sentiment about Australia being expensive but about nothing in Malaysia?? Really???? It’s full of places to explore and good food!!! She also used to go every 3 months, though her reason was for my grandma’s health problem (which is true) and that during school holiday it is very expensive (also true). However, instead of flying for 2 hours, I would now have to fly 14 hours!!! Malaysia is next on the list, maybe I will tag it on when I fly to Indonesia next time.
Australia is also on the list. I remember when I was 10, my classmate went to Australia and she got this ADORABLE koala and kangaroo pencil case. My Mum went, and the excuse is again to accompany my grandma (which is true) but as it was not school holiday, I wasn’t allowed to go :(. She didn’t bring the pencil case either, unfortunately. So it is still on the list for now!
Close to Huddersfield: Harrogate
Now, I have lived in Huddersfield for 5 years, and Manchester for 5 years, so I don’t actually know why I baven’t been to Harrogate at all. It is on the list, still on the list. I heard that Harrogate is very pretty during spring with the cherry blossoms all blooming, so I shall put it on the list this year. The difficulty is, to find a weekend where the cherry blossom is blooming AND it’s sunny, because of course no one wants to be outside when its raining sideways (translate: heavy rain with wind SO strong the rainwater literally travels sideways instead of vertical straight to the ground).
Also, Harrogate has quite good train connection, but now that I have a car, it’s even easier. It’s hard when there’s so many places to visit, yet so few weekend! There’s so many beautiful places in UK despite the multiple complaints about UK.
What about you? What’s attraction close to your home that you haven’t been?
