Every year, the skies over Hamilton, New Zealand, are filled with a spectacular display of colour and light during Balloons Over Waikato festival. This free event, held over five days in March, is the country’s biggest hot air balloon festival and a must-see experience for both locals and visitors.

(PS there are so many other free things to do in Hamilton if you are in the area! And many day trips destinations too)

Opening Ceremony

Baloons over Waikato Opening Ceremony was held this morning in Innes Common, Hamilton Lake Domain. Unfortunately due to too much wind, the baloons couldn’t lift off the grounds. I think it’s quite normal, I had the same issue when attending the hot air baloons festival in York. The baloons were still blown up for display which was quite nice. There were many stalls selling coffees, donuts and breakfast in the area. There were a few people attending, definitely busier than a normal morning, but it wasn’t too crowded.

An outdoor festival scene at dusk with a crowd of people dressed in warm clothing. Some attendees are walking while others stand and chat. In the background, there are food trucks, including one labeled 'FOOD+DRINKS Coffee ESPRESSO,' with propane tanks attached. The sky is cloudy, and Hamilton Lake is visible in the distance.
Stalls and crowd this morning.

The surrounding roads, in fact, was a lot busier due to the combinations of some road closure from the event, more traffic and people stopping to see the baloons. Parking was also busier, but wasn’t impossible. I came with my loyal and humble bicycle so I skipped all the traffic. I definitely recommend coming with a bicycle or by foot, or at least to park nearby and walk to the Lake. There were many families and young kids, who found the baloons fascinating.

Best Tips for Enjoying the Festival

  • Arrive Early: Morning flights start just after sunrise, so get there early for the best views.
  • Dress Warmly: Mornings can be chilly, even in March, so bring a warm layer.
  • Pack a Picnic: While there are food vendors, bringing your own snacks can save time and money.
  • Plan for Crowds: The ZURU Nightglow draws thousands of spectators, so allow extra time for parking and finding a good spot.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

Balloons Over Waikato is more than just a festival—it’s a celebration of community, creativity, and the simple joy of watching balloons float through the sky. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned attendee, it’s an unforgettable experience that showcases the magic of Hamilton in a truly unique way.

The other balloon in the background has a colorful checkered pattern and is further along in the inflation process. A wicker basket is positioned nearby, and a small crowd is gathered to watch.

Do You Need a Ticket?

Only for Zuru Nightglow – unfortunately it’s a ballot and I didn’t even get any. No one I know has gotten any ticket unfortunately. Not to worry, as the rest of the events are free and do not require tickets.

Free, family friendly and fun for all – definitely worth checking out. I’ll be going to more events this week. Have you been to Balloons Over Waikato? Share your favourite moments in the comments below!
